∫ A Halved City

What once was a splendorous city is no more, and all that stands left of it is a broken, empty landscape of once great buildings and structures. The city has lost its identity along with its stability, and no longer carries a name.

While eerily quiet and strangely empty-feeling, the original site of where the city stood is still a remnant of the peace that once filled the world. The structures are broken and overgrown, but a faint echo of welcome still lingers in the air, subconsciously guiding individuals to safety. A sad picture of old greatness, this side of the city still offers what it can to any individuals it harbors.

In the time since the split of the world, a new area has developed in the deepest, most central part of the city. All streets slowly break off into docks, and an intricate maze of glass canals takes over. The buildings in this area seem truly great, though they seem to have suffered the most from neglect. The canals are pure glass, a void seemingly stretching below them endlessly. This area of the city gives off a most unnatural and unnerving feel, as it is meeting point between the city that once was and its new shadow.

Beneath the canals, through a dark and twisted void, lays a mirror city of the one above. This city sits in perpetual darkness, far more broken and dilapidated than its twin above. All of the negative acts, emotions, and feelings fuel this shadowed place, seeping through every part of the city itself. There is no sense of safety or welcome in this shadowed world, as the world itself contaminates everything it touches with the darkness that created it.

Thankfully, crossing between the two cities is near impossible. Even those that still live in the world, regardless of what side of the canals they reside in, are unsure of how to transfer between them. Despite this, the locals residing in the lighter side of the city tend to avoid the canals, preferring to avoid any possible contact with the residents of the shadows below.

Despite the standstill conflict within the city, it can still be a peaceful place in the original side, albeit a quiet one. And, even though the greatness and sentient nature of the previous city has been broken, it is not difficult to feel that it is far from gone.
