Deep within the center of the city lies the most notable part of the top world: the glass canals. This eerie maze sits in the least traversed part of the city, each entrance in marked by a worn out wooden dock.
The canals are not a place within the city, but rather a barrier that sits between the two sides. They are an entity entirely of their own, sitting outside the time, weather, and physics of the top city. The weather is always calm and unnoticeable, and there is always enough light to see, even if it is nighttime in the rest of the city. Distance does not function normally within the canals either; while the canals seem to take up only a small space when viewed from the outside, the inside of the maze stretches on for far longer than it should. Sounds also do not transfer from outside to inside of the canals, or vice versa.
The buildings that line the canals are far taller than any in the city, though they do not appear to be so from outside. They stretch high enough that one can never quite see the sun overhead, leaving most of the canals in light shadows. There are bridges far up above the canals, stretching from building to building. You may traverse through the canals using the bridges, though they will simply lead you to the edge of the canals in only a short while, no matter what direction you attempt to take. Trying to climb a building to see the entire layout of the canals will not yield much, as no matter how far you feel you have traversed, you will always find yourself right around the corner from an entrance to a canal.
If one attempts to trek through the canals by walking on them, they will experience something else entirely. Only a little ways in a traveler will notice that everything begins to look the same. The canals become an endless maze, with every possible landmark resembling the previous. The only time the buildings begin to differ is if a traveler begins actively looking for an exit out; suddenly everything will look distinguishable, and it may only be a few turns until they find one of the docks that marks the entrance to each canal.
Perhaps the eeriest part of the canals is that one will always eventually traverse them alone. The canals have a way of separating anyone, whether it be around the first corner or an hour in to your trek. All it will take is a simple turn of the head for your party member to completely disappear, leaving you both separated and alone in the canals.
Constantly traversing the canals is not advised; it is unknown how to transfer between the top and bottom cities, but the canals is where the feat would be accomplished. No one knows the trigger or entrance to initiate a transfer, leaving the canals an unknown hazard. The only precaution to prevent a transfer into the darkness below is to avoid the canals entirely. |
